This show was really quite good. I was not expecting much out of it since most shows about India in the past, like the ones from PBS etc follow largely predictable lines and are not interesting to people who already know something about the country. Also, this was not a totally politically correct show, and took clearly defined points of view on political topics. Well done Fareed Zakaria…

If a regular viewer can offer ‘advice’ to a foreign policy pundit, one thing that can help arrive at a better analysis on a country as confusing as India is to follow this simple advice: Think of India in a similar manner as Europe but with a Union that is much further along. In other words, treat each state as a separate country, and you will get answers to all the confusing questions about contradictions. India can have right wing, left wing, corrupt, clean, large and small states running things in very different ways from one other. Fareed has already touched upon this by talking about Gujarat, and very briefly about Bihar etc. But the best way to analyze India’s progress or lack thereof is to see what lessons one state can offer to another and to the center and vice versa.
